Hike for Hong Kong

Charltons participated Hike for Hong Kong, a charitable initiative of the Listing Committee of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (Listing Committee), in conjunction with the Listing Department and in support of HandsOn Hong Kong.

Members of the Listing Committee and their invited guests took to the countryside in October 2014 to take part in the first annual Hike for Hong Kong charity walk. More than 70 participants headed to Sai Kung Country Park to walk the beautiful Hong Kong trail from Tsak Yue Wu to Wong Shek Pier. In just a few hours on the Hike for Hong Kong, the  group from the Hong Kong community raised over HK$450,000.

In addition to Members of the Listings Committee, their colleagues, friends and family, other participants included staff of the Listings Department and other staff of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Ltd, their friends and families.

Hike For Hong Kong supports HandsOn Hong Kong a local community focused Hong Kong charity. Money raised from this event will specifically benefit a new HandsOn Hong Kong programme called “Tech for the Elderly” which aims to reduce isolation among the elderly through technology training and by bringing different generations together through volunteerism.

Julia Charlton of the Listings Committee, and initiator of Hike For Hong Kong says ‘”It has been wonderful to see so many members of the Listings Committee and others connected with the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong join together today to raise funds for those in need in our local community, through the Tech for the Elderly initiative. It’s been a great opportunity to escape the concrete jungle of Central for the greenery of one of Hong Kong’s most picturesque country parks. Based on today’s success we plan to make this an annual event and planning for next year is already underway.”

“We are delighted to have the support of the Listings Committee to raise funds to help the elderly” says Caroline Sprod, Executive Director of HandsOn Hong Kong. “One in three elderly citizens in Hong Kong live below the poverty line, and this funding will enable us to set up a new programme, Tech for the Elderly, to help improve their day to day communication and access to modern technology.”

About HandsOn Hong Kong, a Hong Kong Charity

HandsOn Hong Kong is a registered Hong Kong charity, founded in 2007.  HandsOn Hong Kong is one of the affiliates of the Global HandsOn Network that originates from the United States; in Asia, other affiliates include HandsOn Shanghai, Singapore Cares, iVolunteer in India and HandsOn Tokyo.

HandsOn Hong Kong’s mission is to mobilize and empower our community to meet pressing social needs in Hong Kong through volunteer services.  HandsOn Hong Kong volunteers are given the flexibility to commit to just one volunteer activity at a time, and access to a wide range of volunteer opportunities serving a variety of local causes. Volunteers simply register and sign up on line for the activities they wish to take part in, and help a Hong Kong charity.

HandsOn Hong Kong’s volunteer programmes support under-served local causes and benefit a wide range of disadvantaged groups including children, elderly people and people with disabilities.  The programmes cover activities including the provision of after-school tutoring to ethnic minority students; helping improve the living conditions of the elderly and people with disabilities; caring for abandoned animals, as well as assisting in the redistribution of edible surplus foods.  HandsOn Hong Kong holds around 80 activities a month serving the local community.

Thanks to this support, HandsOn Hong Kong are now launching the “Tech For The Elderly” program. This program will collect and refurbish small tech items and redistribute them to needy elderly citizens.

HandsOn Hong Kong invites you to donate smartphones, tablets and digital cameras in working order.
